TESLA'S ATTIC
by Neal Shusterman & Eric Elfman
(Disney-Hyperion Books)

When tragedy turns 14-year old Nick Slate's life upside down, he moves with his dad and little brother into a delapidated old house they've inherited in Colorado Springs. Nick wants to make the attic his bedroom, but it's filled floor to ceiling with rusty antiques and ancient appliances: an old toaster, a reel-to-reel tape recorder, a box camera, and much more. Nick hauls all the junk downstairs and holds a garage sale — where he meets the overbearing but loyal Mitch; the death-obsessed but witty Vince; and the popular but conflicted Caitlin.

After the stuff is gone, Nick learns that Tesla, the great inventor, lived in that house years ago — and all the "junk" Nick just got rid of were Tesla's last inventions! And each object has some kind of bizarre or dangerous property that, in the wrong hands, could destroy the world. Nick realizes they have to get them all back.

But soon Nick learns that a secret society of scientists, the Accelerati, founded a hundred years ago by Thomas Edison, are also trying to get their hand on Tesla's inventions.

The race is on! Now it's up to Nick and his new friends to get everything back before the Accelerati do!

—Booklist

"Entertaining and often suprising...an exciting and imaginative thriller."

—Publisher's Weekly

"A plot more devious, characters far quirkier, climaxes (yes, there are two) more breathless, and a narration much, much funnier than recent mad-science offerings."
