Twisted Tortoise

Australian scientists observing the Fitzroy River tortoise couldn’t understand how it was able to stay underwater for so much longer than other tortoises. Tortoises are reptiles, after all, and they have to surface from time to time to breathe. Yet this tortoise seemed to manage quite fine without ever coming up for air.

Upon studying the animal, the scientists found gills surrounding the tortoise's rear end, allowing it to take in oxygen while remaining underwater.

In other words, they discovered the tortoise was breathing through its butt!
